Ryanair resists more claims than almost any other major carrier. This guide tells you exactly how to file, what to expect, and how to win.
Ryanair is Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers and also one of the most aggressive when it comes to resisting EU261 compensation claims. This is not a judgment — it is a well-documented pattern that shapes what strategy you need to use.
Your flight must have been delayed 3+ hours at arrival (not departure), cancelled, or you must have been denied boarding. Check your actual arrival time against scheduled arrival on FlightAware (flightaware.com) or FlightRadar24 (flightradar24.com). Save a PDF screenshot — this is your primary evidence.
Ryanair flights are covered by EU261 when departing from EU airports, and by UK261 when departing from UK airports. Ryanair operates many UK-departure routes — all are covered.
File at ryanair.com under Help → Customer Support → EU261 Compensation. You will need your booking reference, flight number, date of travel, and bank account details for payment.
Also state in your claim submission that you require cash payment under EU261/UK261 — not travel vouchers, credits, or any form of non-cash compensation. Put this in writing from the start.
Date-stamp every submission and communication. When you escalate, you will need to show that you attempted to resolve with Ryanair first and they did not adequately respond. Keep screenshots of online submissions and confirmation emails.
A common Ryanair tactic is to offer travel vouchers or Ryanair credits instead of cash. This is not compliant with EU261. The regulation requires cash (or direct bank transfer) payment. You are under no legal obligation to accept a voucher.
If Ryanair offers you a voucher, respond in writing with the following:
"I acknowledge receipt of your offer. I do not accept travel vouchers in satisfaction of my EU261/UK261 claim. I require cash payment of [amount] in accordance with EU Regulation 261/2004 / the Air Passenger Rights Regulations 2019. Please advise your bank transfer process. If this is not resolved within 14 days, I will escalate to [CAA / Irish Aviation Authority]."
Note: If you have already accepted a voucher without knowing this, contact the relevant enforcement body — in many cases, the acceptance can be challenged if you were not clearly informed of your right to cash.
Knowing these patterns lets you anticipate and rebut them immediately:
Ryanair is registered in Ireland, which affects which enforcement body handles non-UK routes. Understanding this prevents filing with the wrong body and losing time:
If your Ryanair flight departed from a UK airport (Manchester, London Stansted, Bristol, Edinburgh, etc.), your claim is governed by UK261. Escalate to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) at caa.co.uk if Ryanair does not resolve. Ryanair is a member of AviationADR for UK routes — this is another option before the CAA.
For Ryanair flights departing from EU airports (Dublin, Barcelona, Frankfurt Hahn, etc.), EU261 applies. Since Ryanair is registered in Ireland, the primary enforcement body is the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) for flights governed by Irish jurisdiction. For flights departing from other EU countries, use that country's National Enforcement Body.
The CAA and IAA are accustomed to Ryanair complaints and have established relationships with the airline. Either can prompt a faster response than direct negotiation with Ryanair alone. Filing an enforcement complaint costs nothing and frequently results in payment within weeks.
File with full evidence. Explicitly demand cash. Note the date of submission.
Write formally, quoting the specific article of EU261/UK261, rebutting their rejection reason specifically, and giving 14 days to respond. Reference your intention to file with the enforcement body.
Ryanair UK routes: file with AviationADR (aviationadr.org.uk). This is Ryanair's approved ADR body in the UK. Decisions are binding on Ryanair. Free to consumers. Average resolution: 6–12 weeks.
If AviationADR is not available or does not resolve: file with the CAA (UK routes) or the Irish Aviation Authority (flights from Ireland) or the relevant national NEB for your departure country.
UK small claims is inexpensive and effective. Ryanair typically settles before a hearing. Filing fee: £25–£115 depending on amount. Courts routinely uphold valid EU261 claims.
Be realistic about how long this process takes with Ryanair specifically:
In practice, the single most effective step for most Ryanair claims is filing with AviationADR or the CAA/IAA after Ryanair's initial rejection. Ryanair has a strong incentive to settle before a binding decision is issued — a formal ADR or enforcement complaint almost always accelerates payment on legitimate claims.
